"A Home for the elderly under the
aegis of Ambikagiri Memorial Trust Society"

A story that started with its first resident Smt. Kusum Ujir and her room-mate Dinabandhabi Suchibrata Roychoudhury, the first Old-Age Home of Assam, ‘Amar Ghar’ now is a family of more than sixty residents from different parts of the State along with their caretakers.

A pioneer in initiating and propagating community home stay for the elderly in the Northeastern region of India, the foundation of Amar Ghar was laid on December 18, 2001. This non-profit initiative was taken at a time when sending the elders to a home was considered a taboo in fear of repercussions from the society. However, the need to establish a quiet stay for those who wanted to continue living their lives independently and peacefully in their second innings and also enjoy the companionship of their peers, was timely visualized by the then Managing Trustee of the Ambikagiri Memorial Trust Society. Always being ahead of her time, she envisioned the future needs of the Society.

Hence, the project was established and initial construction to develop an Assam-type residence started. There were seven rooms, a library, a living room, a dining hall and a kitchen. The home was inaugurated on September 1, 2003 that also marked the birth anniversary of the Founder, in a plot of land donated by Late Suchibrata herself.

A Home For The Elderly

  4. A Library-cum-Reading room
